Injury & Rehabilitation
Dr. Brauer uses evidence-based interventions to guide clients through sport-related injuries—from the initial event, through the recovery and rehabilitation phase, to return to play.
Services Offered
Support Following Injury
Individuals may have a variety of reactions to injury. Psychological factors that can aid in recovery include processing loss, managing stress, and maintaining adherence to the rehabilitation process.
Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S)
RED-S occurs when an individual experiences low energy availability due to an imbalance between energy intake and energy expenditure. RED-S can compromise many aspects of health and performance. One way to think about RED-S is that of a “metabolic injury.” Psychological factors addressed include behavior change, disordered eating, and other mental health concerns.
Rehabilitation
Depending on the injury, rehabilitation can involve a long road with different phases. When surgery is involved, psychological and behavioral components can be addressed to assist individuals in their pre- and post- operative care. Some individuals may find it difficult to maintain motivation and commitment to physical therapy exercises and return to play protocols. Evidence-based interventions can help strengthen one’s intrinsic motivation to engage in recovery-focused behaviors.
Return to Play
Returning to sport after injury, illness, or time off can pose great opportunities but it also can present significant challenges. Psychological and behavioral factors are addressed in therapy to prepare for and manage transitions. Following injury, some individuals may choose to restructure their participation in sport or transition out, which can be worked through in therapy.
