Sleep Therapy
Sleep is essential to physical and mental wellbeing. If you are not sleeping well, you can easily feel exhausted and overwhelmed. Sleep Therapy, or Behavioral Sleep Medicine (BSM), is a unique branch of psychology that addresses the cognitive and behavioral underpinnings of sleep disorders. The most common sleep disorder treated by BSM professionals is insomnia, but many evidence-based treatments can be applied to other sleep disorders.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I)
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is an evidence-based treatment for insomnia. A number of factors may contribute to the development of sleep problems, while another set of factors contribute to the maintenance of insomnia. CBT-I focuses on these treating these maintenance mechanisms.
CBT-I is considered the first-line treatment for insomnia. Research demonstrates that CBT-I produces comparable or better outcomes compared to sleeping medication, and that results last longer because they address underlying causes. Treatment ranges from 4-12 sessions, but treatment is always tailored to the individual’s needs.
CBT-I is a non-pharmacologic method of treating insomnia. Individuals should make a personal decision regarding any sleep medications in collaboration with their prescribing physician.
